Stomach acid is natural and vital. Nobody has put it in the stomach. It’s not the cause of acid reflux disease. This acid is there for a reason to break down foods and sort them out. Proper digestion depends on enough of this stomach acid being present while you are eating.

The band of muscles at the end of the esophagus opens and allows foods into the stomach. Then it closes to stop the food and ACID coming back up, into the esophagus. Acid reflux is experienced by many people when foods or digestive juices escape from the stomach and come up through the esophagus.

It is important that you try help your stomach to have enough acid at mealtimes, chewing your food thoroughly helps. Getting saliva mixed up in the food as you are chewing will help get the digestive process off to a good start. The acid is needed most at mealtimes so snacking during the day doesn’t help. It causes the the stomach to pump out the acid gradually instead of saving it for when its really needed.

Therefore if you suffer with acid reflux its better to eat meals or snacks at least three hours apart. Like if you have breakfast at 6.00am then a snack at 9.00am and lunch at 12.00noon, would be fine. By also making sure that you don’t drink too much during the meal also helps. Too much liquid dilutes the necessary acid in the stomach. It has been found that to drink a glass of water maybe 30 minutes to an hour before or after a meal is most beneficial. Acutally taking only a few ounces during the meal. Feel free to drink as much pure natural water as you like an hour or two after the meal.

Eating large meals is another cause to bring on an acid reflux attack. The increased pressure on the stomach causes the stomach contents to be forced out and up into the esophagus. Your body needs at least two hours to properly digest your food and you should never lie down immediatley after eating any large meal. A way to avoid overproduction of acid would to eat smaller portions at each meal. Leaving out fried foods and any that contains refined sugar and caffeine also helps the production of too much acid.

Being overweight can also increase abdominal pressure so by cutting back on portion sizes will not only lessen the risk of acid reflux but will also help you to lose a few pounds at the same time. If you could add in a little daily exercise too, your whole body will benefit enormously not just your stomach.

Its not just overeating or eating the wrong foods that causes acid reflux. Acid reflux is in some people caused when the sphincter muscle at the end of the esophagus becomes weak and does not close properly. Prescription drugs, alcohol, and smoking, along with certain foods, have been known to weaken the sphincter muscles. Try natural remedies and do your best not to use antacids as they cut down the acids you will need when you eat. If you do not have enough acid, the stomach is unable to do its job of breaking down the food into the various nutrient components.

Inadequate digestion of proteins can cause the liver to increase production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is the bad cholesterol that does the most damage to your body. If your stomach is unsettled between meals, try eating something that will settle it without triggering more acid production, like sauerkraut. Five to ten minutes after eating sauerkraut your stomach should start to relax.

The benefits of natural solutions are they normally cost a lot less, but even more important is the fact that natural solutions are a healthier alternative. They tend to reduce the possibility of becoming dependant on addictive chemical drugs.

Three herbs that are well known also for soothing stomach muscles, are chamomile, gentian, and ginger. If your problem does not respond successfully to natural remedies within a few days, please see your doctor/physician.

Being a serious condition, acid reflux can be harmful for those suffering from it. It can be really difficult to get rid of acid reflux for people constantly suffering from it, and can be a painful and an uncomfortable process. To control the problem, or to make it milder, many people go for acid reflux remedy or a heartburn remedy. Getting the most out of their acid reflux remedy is the most important thing for such people in order to reduce the discomfort and the pain this condition might cause to their bodies.

How to choose the perfect acid reflux remedy?

Among so many options of acid reflux remedies available these days, some are used to get rid of the discomfort by people who are suffering for just a short period of time and some remedies are used by people who have had a persistent acid reflux problem. The amount of medication of the acid reflux remedy should commiserate with the level of problem one is suffering from. If the problem is minor, you can do with a minor dosage of acid reflux remedy and if the problem is severe, you might need to take stronger doses of acid reflux remedies. This point should be kept in mind at all times.

Depending upon the body type and the kind of item causing the heartburn, different acid reflux remedies may be needed for different people. One kind may work for some people while it might not show any improvement in others. It is common to find people trying out more than one forms of acid reflux remedies at the beginning to see which one suits him the best. Once you have found the perfect acid reflux remedy for yourself, you should stick to it because other forms of acid reflux remedies might not be ass effective as the present one.

When to consume the remedy?

Timing of the medication in case of acid reflux remedies is the most crucial aspect of negating the effect of heartburn. Even those medications which claim to be effective for 24 hours should be taken at the perfect time, which is about an hour before having a spicy or acetic meal, so that the medication is at its full potential when the food is being digested and negates the effect effectively.

For those who suffer from heartburns in the middle of the night, should take a strong dose of acid reflux remedy just before sleeping for a comfortable sleep.

However, many cases of acid reflux can be treated with home remedies before it progresses to the point of needing harsh medications. Acid reflux remedies will include certain types of food that you can eat to calm your acid reflux, avoiding bad dietary habits that can cause flare-ups.

Bear in mind that many cases of acid reflux are caused by foods that are very high in acid content themselves, inceasing the acid production in your stomach. Good remedies will include avoiding these foods, which include all red meat, citrus fruits of any variety, berries, coffee and other beverages high in caffeine, red wine, certain dairy products, and (unfortunately) chocolate, yes afraid so. Fried foods, spicy foods, junk foods, and fast foods should also be avoided. For any acid reflux remedies to work, you also need to be aware of any foods that seem to react in your own system and which cause acid reflux for you. If there are certain foods that seem to give you added heartburn or discomfort, then of course you should avoid those as well. In my case it was my favourite..pastry.

The other side of the coin of course to finding remedies for acid reflux, is eating foods that settle your stomach and that reduces its acid production. Fruits and vegetables (except for citrus fruits mentioned above) are easiest thing for your stomach to digest and can actually retrain it to function better. Fiber is great for the digestive process and can calm acid production notably; so try some high fiber food, bread or toast if you feel an attack of acid reflux coming on. Also, protein may help to strengthen the muscles of the stomach and the small valve that helps to keep acid in its place, so eating lean meats such as turkey, chicken, and fish may help.

Looking after your body well is an important part of Acid reflux remedies. Most suferers report having flare-ups at night when they are trying to sleep; this is more common in those who eat justt before bed or who have a very large dinner in the evening. Avoid eating at least two hours before bedtime and make sure you eat modest in portions.

Also, when you’re lying down this can cause the acid to move back up into your esophagus. This was the aspect that scared me more than anything so try putting a book, wooden blocks or building bricks, if you can get them, under the feet of your bed at the top or under the top of your mattress; anything to keep your chest a bit elevated is going to help keep acids in your stomach where they belong.

Take a medium sized glass of water before retiring for the night. Not only will this flush out any nasties in your stomach, including those harmful acids, but will help nutrulize your heartburn. While these Acid reflux remedies may not work completely in all cases, they can go a long way toward reducing heartburn flare ups.
