Stomach acid is natural and vital. Nobody has put it in the stomach. It’s not the cause of acid reflux disease. This acid is there for a reason to break down foods and sort them out. Proper digestion depends on enough of this stomach acid being present while you are eating.

The band of muscles at the end of the esophagus opens and allows foods into the stomach. Then it closes to stop the food and ACID coming back up, into the esophagus. Acid reflux is experienced by many people when foods or digestive juices escape from the stomach and come up through the esophagus.

It is important that you try help your stomach to have enough acid at mealtimes, chewing your food thoroughly helps. Getting saliva mixed up in the food as you are chewing will help get the digestive process off to a good start. The acid is needed most at mealtimes so snacking during the day doesn’t help. It causes the the stomach to pump out the acid gradually instead of saving it for when its really needed.

Therefore if you suffer with acid reflux its better to eat meals or snacks at least three hours apart. Like if you have breakfast at 6.00am then a snack at 9.00am and lunch at 12.00noon, would be fine. By also making sure that you don’t drink too much during the meal also helps. Too much liquid dilutes the necessary acid in the stomach. It has been found that to drink a glass of water maybe 30 minutes to an hour before or after a meal is most beneficial. Acutally taking only a few ounces during the meal. Feel free to drink as much pure natural water as you like an hour or two after the meal.

Eating large meals is another cause to bring on an acid reflux attack. The increased pressure on the stomach causes the stomach contents to be forced out and up into the esophagus. Your body needs at least two hours to properly digest your food and you should never lie down immediatley after eating any large meal. A way to avoid overproduction of acid would to eat smaller portions at each meal. Leaving out fried foods and any that contains refined sugar and caffeine also helps the production of too much acid.

Being overweight can also increase abdominal pressure so by cutting back on portion sizes will not only lessen the risk of acid reflux but will also help you to lose a few pounds at the same time. If you could add in a little daily exercise too, your whole body will benefit enormously not just your stomach.

Its not just overeating or eating the wrong foods that causes acid reflux. Acid reflux is in some people caused when the sphincter muscle at the end of the esophagus becomes weak and does not close properly. Prescription drugs, alcohol, and smoking, along with certain foods, have been known to weaken the sphincter muscles. Try natural remedies and do your best not to use antacids as they cut down the acids you will need when you eat. If you do not have enough acid, the stomach is unable to do its job of breaking down the food into the various nutrient components.

Inadequate digestion of proteins can cause the liver to increase production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is the bad cholesterol that does the most damage to your body. If your stomach is unsettled between meals, try eating something that will settle it without triggering more acid production, like sauerkraut. Five to ten minutes after eating sauerkraut your stomach should start to relax.

The benefits of natural solutions are they normally cost a lot less, but even more important is the fact that natural solutions are a healthier alternative. They tend to reduce the possibility of becoming dependant on addictive chemical drugs.

Three herbs that are well known also for soothing stomach muscles, are chamomile, gentian, and ginger. If your problem does not respond successfully to natural remedies within a few days, please see your doctor/physician.

The following facts about Acid Reflux Treament will hopefully be helpful to you. We can’t survive without food is a true and proven fact. Food provides the body with all the nutrients and energy needed for us to do all our daily activities.

People know that the digestive system, particularly the stomach, digests all the food taken in by the body. Acids found inside the stomach decompose in it, turning it to amino acids and proteins. Because of a protective membrane, the acids can’t harm the stomach which protects it from the acids.

If you suffer with acid reflux, you probably already know that the esophagus is where the food passes through before it reaches the stomach. The esophagus has no protective layer like that of the stomach. So when acid from the stomach is able to penetrate the esophagus, the walls are easily burned. The sensation commonly called heartburn.

Heartburn is the first symptom that most people with acid reflux experience. The next thing that you might experience is regurgitation, wherein the food that you just ate will go back to your mouth. By not looking for an Acid Reflux Treatment your acid reflux may get severe. Some experience chest pains, you may have difficulty in swallowing the food, until finally, you might get asthma, and when the acid reaches your mouth, it will naturally corrode your teeth.

Don’t worry. Acid reflux can be cured but it greatly depends on the severity of the disease. A small valve, called lower esophageal (LES), can be found in between the esophagus and the stomach. When it does not function properly, you’ll suffer from acid reflux. The heartburn sensation is due to the rising acid level with which the esophageal lining can’t withstand.

Through medical therapy and surgical methods, the treatment of this condition can be done. It is aimed at eliminating acid reflux completely from our system.
Another acid reflux treatment would be the use of antacids. More often than not, most people use this treatment. It is readily available and comes in tablet or liquid form. Some prefer the liquid form because it is more easily consumed. Antacids can be taken after you’ve eaten, probably after 30 minutes to one hour.

Other antacids in tablet form, create a foam-layer inside the stomach, the idea is to prevent acidic juices from penetrating through it. Always make sure that you chew the tablet thoroughly so that its maximum healing properties will be released.
Strengthening the lower esophageal muscle is the focus of some medications and this greatly reduces acid reflux. Like with any medication it would be best to ask a doctor before taking it. The doctor can assess the severity of the acid reflux and will therefore be able to advise you on the appropriate treatment.

Most doctors recommend a change in diet to those who suffer from acid reflux. Although some people may find this to be difficult, it is an easy and simple way to ease the suffering of acid reflux and a choice that should be taken unless they want to worsen their condition. Don’t wait until you need a surgical treatment to cure your condition. It is best to start curing acid reflux as soon as you discover that you’re suffering from it.

In all cases, if you’ve experienced the symptoms of acid reflux, immediately consult a doctor. Find as much information about acid reflux to help you in the better understanding of your condition. The doctor can provide you with the correct diagnosis and the the all important facts about the acid reflux treament which best suits you.

Its long suffering adults that would consider Acid reflux Surgery but based on scientific research, anyone, even infants and young children have a tendency to have acid reflux at some point. This disorder most common in infants and young children in time, disappears.

Acid reflux known also as gastro-esophageal reflux disease most definitely affect adults and can happen at any time especially to someone who had just had a large meal with lots of acidic foods or even to someone with a history of acid reflux and having recurrences of the disorder due to unhealthy eating patterns.

Its true that indulging in certain foods and a busy schedule can cause acid reflux. When a person consumes a heavy meal, full of acid foods, an abnormality in the stomach can occur like bringing back the food induced to the esophagus and throat. Acid reflux is unexplainable to some because this condition can occur anytime but are most likely to occur after several heavy meals or unhealthy eating habits.

Many people with Acid reflux can take control of their condition by means of medical treatment and even appropriate diet. Some people with a severe condition of acid reflux may consider surgical procedures because for them, acid reflux surgery seems the best solution for their disorder.

There are several surgical procedures that acid reflux patients can choose from. The most effective and safe acid reflux surgeries that most patients encounter are Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, also known as Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication and Intraluminal Endoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, or fundoplication for short, is the most common form of acid reflux surgery. This surgery is performed by tightening the walls of the esophagus in the area next to the stomach then adding pressure to the lower esophageal muscles. When the pressure increased between the stomach and esophagus, this medical procedure prevents the content of the stomach to go upward inside the throat and esophagus. Another method mostly considered by other patients with acid reflux is having the esophageal valve tightened in order to seal the esophagus and prevent gastric acid to enter.

Intraluminal endoscopic surgery is another acid reflux surgery that most patients prefer. This surgical procedure has the same procedure as the fundoplication except that it involves a small optical, tubular instrument that is needed to be inserted in the body and at the same time, view the inner parts of the body that needs surgical or biopsy attention thus allowing an actual biopsy or surgery to be performed. This is possible through the so called endoscope.

Intraluminal endoscopic acid reflux surgery is quick and has minimal risks for the patients. As such, a post-operatory treatment is not required but allows possibly fast recovery for patients as well.

Acid reflux can now be treated because of medical advancement and the availablility of modern treatments. Patients who wish to erradicate acid reflux can do so because of the options given to them through possible medications, proper diet or surgery. Surgery is most recommended to people with chronic acid reflux but is now available to patients with less serious conditions of acid reflux. Discussions with your practioner will give you the best options that are available.

Surgical procedures have been the most common way of getting rid of acid reflux completely and permanently. Patients that are considering Acid Reflux Surgery will have quick recovery after the surgical procedures and will no longer have acid reflux.

Acid reflux in babies can be a frequent problem. Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux. Babies who suffer with this complaint can go from mild to severe conditions such as spitting up, abdominal pain and waking in the night.

Understanding of the physiological or the mechanical aspect of the condition would offer a more comprehensive discussion.

The body has a band of muscle in a circular structure that is called the lower esophageal sphincter. This muscle detaches the esophagus from the stomach. When food comes into the stomach, it closes so as to prevent the stomach acids and contents from backing up into the esophagus or regurgitating.
Because in some babies the lower esophageal sphincter is immature, some partially digested foods and digestive acids are allowed to be refluxed. The condition irrates the esophageal lining resulting in inflammation which is commonly known as hearturn.
Between two to four weeks old is when babies usually develops acid reflux. Medicines prescribed by doctors should minimize the production of digestive acids. Around the six to nine month age babies will be spending a lot of their time in the upright postion. Therefore food taken in, should stay down so acid reflux naturally starts to subside reducing possible regurgitation.

These pointers on feeding and positioning of babies may be helpful to lessen acid reflux in babies:

Feeding baby more often but with less the amount they are accustomed to, makes sense. The less the volume of milk going into the stomach, the quicker the digestion and there will be less available for regurgitation.

Keep baby in the upright position after each feed. Gravity helps keep the digestive contents down.Position baby seated in your lap and rest their head on your chest. Keeping this position for at least half an hour after feeding.

Breast feeding helps alot. Breast milk is well known to have many advantages over formula, mainly for babies with acid reflux. The special enzymes that assist in digestion will lessen the spitting up. Breast milk is digested faster also it does not trigger allergy to babies, compared to other milks available. For those who are formula feeding, hypoallergenic formula is available but should only be used if advised by a doctor. It has a higher tolerance with sensitive intestines and can also be digested faster by the stomach so as to minimize refluxes.

Since its natural to lie baby flat when sleeping, like this, gravity cannot help in keeping the food down. As a result, a baby with acid reflux often endures a restless, broken nights sleep but if baby sleeps soundly in this position there is no need to change it. However, if they become restless, have abdominal pain, acid breath or wet burps, elevating the babies crib to about 30 degrees may be enough to reduce regurgitation. Trying to train baby to sleep on their left hand side may also be beneficial. In this position the inlet of the stomach is higher than the exit.

This also will help in keeping food down and reducing acid reflux in babies.

There are several reasons why pregnant women experience heartburn sysmptoms.
One of them is that they have an increase of hormones whilst pregnant. This may result in the softening of ligaments functioning in the lower esophageal sphinter (LES) that should be closed. Sometimes when the LES rests it will let gastric acid and food backi into the esophagus and the throat if its not firmly closed.
Another reason that women experience heartburn during pregnancy is due to the obvious changes in the body and with the developement of the baby more pressure is created in the stomach. The stomach contents are therefore forced into the LES and then to the esophagus.

There are several ways a pregnant women can help reduce the discomfort of heartburn.
01) Keep a note and avoid the foods that triggers your heartburn. Everyone is different but typical foods that aggravate are spicy foods, chocolates, fried fatty foods, citrus fruits and juices and tomato based products.

02) Avoid excess caffeine, like coffee, tea and soda. Some people go off these in pregnancy any way but too much of these can cause the LES to relax and the acid return into the esophagus.

03) It’s common knowledge to avoid alcohol in pregnancy but this also is another contributor to heartburn.

04) It’s also reported that having lots of small meals throughout the day is far better than eating a large meal.

05) Take your time when eating – don’t rush your meals. By chewing your food thoroughly will help you avoid heartburn.

06) Have your last meal at least 3 hours before lying down to sleep.

07) Sleeping with the head of the bed raised by six to eight inches or using a ‘wedge’ pillow to elevate the head should help with night time heartburn. By doing this, gravity will work in help keeping the acids in your stomach, not in the esophagus.Your doctor/medical practioner will have additional expert knowledge on this subject.

08) Another trigger to heartburn in pregnancy is tightness around the waist and stomach. Don’t wear tight clothes. This is the perfect time to be able to wear comfy clothing.

09) Avoid creating too much pressure in the stomach when bending – do it at the knees – not at the waist.

10) Sit upright in a relaxing chair, you can still be comfortable without slouching.

11) Don’t over eat just because your are pregnant, maintain a sensible weight. Too much fat will add more stress to your stomach which in turn will force the contents throughout the LES and to the esophagus. Stay within your doctors guidelines.

12) Please avoid smoking. We all know and doctors have stated several effects that smoking has on pregnant women.Experiencing heartburn is one of them.

All of the above may help to the reduce the suffering of Acid reflux and heartburn but you should ALWAYS consult with your doctor if you are concerned about anything during pregnancy.

How do you know if that irritating burning sensation in your chest that sometimes causes you great discomfort is simply heartburn or gastroesphageal disease (GERD)

The majority of people suffer from heartburn at least once in their lives.

It may have been after enjoying a late night spicy meal. It may have been when in the late stages of pregnancy. Times will vary for different people and so will the acid reflux symptoms.

For some, the burn never eases, and what was originally thought to be heartburn is turned into a disease that can wreak havoc on your life – emotionally and physically, causing sleep deprivation and misery on a daily basis.

You may try the over-the-counter medications to help the problem but if it continues, you may need to find a different solution to your symptoms of acid reflux.

One of the biggest determiners of finding out if you have heartburn or GERD is the frequency of the symptoms.

GERD sufferers probably have heartburn more than twice a week. The burning sensation lasts longer than for someone who occasionally gets indigestion.

Acid reflux causes for some a serious problem of finding it hard to swallow during the moments they are feeling the burn in the chest. A simple antacid may work for heartburn but GERD is harder to cure with ordinary medications.

Heartburn can actually affect you at any time of the day or night. Those with acid reflux symptoms GERD, notice it flaring up at night while trying to get to sleep or stay asleep. Keep a note of the frequency and severity of your symptoms and what may have triggered the severe symptoms, for example what you may have eaten prior to the onset.

If you feel that your entire lifestyle is being affected because you fear the onset of heartburn, offer this information to your doctor/physician, it may help in diagnosing if you have GERD or just the occasional heartburn.

Heartburn or GERD doesn’t have to spoil the enjoyment of life. Acid reflux remedies and treatments and even surgery for severe cases are available.

Take control of your heartburn and acid reflux symptoms by finding a cure/relief that works best for you.

Stress can be an indirect cause to heartburn and it is not uncommon to some GERD sufferers, that the burning in the chest may feel at times like they are experiencing a heart attack. If these acid reflux symptoms and feelings occur, it is most important to get checked by your doctor/physician

It has not been scientifically proven that stress is linked to heartburn but we do know that there is an indirect connection to acid reflux causes. To lessen your daily heartburn suffering, it is vital to your health to try to manage your stress levels.

Stress affects people in different ways – some may sleep less, eat more or eat less, make bad food choices, increase other habits like smoking and drinking. All of which may trigger your heartburn. Most sufferers will have a good idea of which foods to avoid with acid reflux.

What stress factors are currently affecting your life? Could it be your job, your finances being over stretched or maybe relationship issues. Any of these could contribute to your heartburn if you are making bad lifestyle decisions.

There are many simple ways of improving your lifestyle which in turn will help alleviate your stress and ultimately your heartburn. We all now have busy lives with work and families but try making some ‘me time’ say by taking just 15 mins a day to start with, to check out the sport, flick through that glossy magazine with a cup of coffee. Gradually build up the time so that maybe you could join an exercise class, a gym or maybe an art class. Anything, that allows you, sometime to yourself to relax and enjoy life a bit more.

Relaxing and unwinding whether it is by doing any of the above or by listening to a CD, trying meditation or having a massage will help you from overeating, drinking alcohol or smoking excessively, all of which can lead to instances of heartburn.

Find ways to reduce stress and prevent heartburn that won’t break the bank.

There are plenty of free activities for you to enjoy which will improve your lifestyle and help get the most of life as well as improving your control of GERD suffering.

If you are experiencing acid reflux disease symptoms like heartburn, getting relief as soon as possible may mean a quick trip to the nearest pharmacy for some antacid medication to help relieve the burn.

You may end up going through endless boxes of acid reflux medication to find that the relief is for only a few minutes at a time. Antacids are less expensive than alternative drugs but for those people who are suffering from GERD, not just an ordinary case of indigestion the heartburn never really seems to go away.

Some long term users of antacids are often plagued with side effects, due to the magnesium they retain from the excessive antacid use. These may include diarrhea and kidney problems.

You may want try another pharmaceutical solution for your acid reflux disease such as H2 blockers. Available over the counter, H2 blockers tend to last a bit longer but the draw back is they may take half an hour or even longer to work, unlike the instant relief like antacids. These blockers work by cutting down on the acids in your stomach.

H2 blockers, like many medications also have side affects. Including constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Gerd sufferers may need stronger acid reflux medication since they don’t prevent heartburn on a long term basis.

Another option is to seek treatment using proton pump inhibitors. Known as PPI’s. These don’t just cut down the acid production in your stomach – they halt it.

Proton pump inhibitors can give continual relief from heartburn symptoms to those who experience GERD but there are some unusual complications surrounding the use of these medications. Connections in the use of proton pump inhibitors, to hip fractures was found in the December 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The increased risk of pneumonia was also connected.

Always make sure you seek the advice of a healthcare professional to assess the severity of your acid reflux disease and heartburn symptoms. While you may need medications to help you ease the pain, you want to make an informed decision when taking something that could negatively affect you in other ways.

With the regular intake of food and drink the digestive system is used daily, causing in some people, acid reflux symptoms. When food and drink are taken in, it passes through the oesophagus passage which helps breakdown the food. When the food reaches the stomach, acid and pepsin is released to aid in the process of digestion.

A common digestive disease that most people have encountered and neglected is acid reflux or heartburn. This digestive disease or disorder occurs when the oesophagus is aggravated by the acid regurgitating to the stomach, while acid is being seeped back through the oesophagus and throat.

There are symptoms to indicate if you have acid reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease which is also known as heartburn.

The most common of the acid reflux symptoms is associated with the searing /burning sensation in the digestive tract, usually in the chest or throat. Some even suffer hoarseness, acid in the mouth, sour or bitter taste, wheezing and coughing. Some acid reflux symptoms are often mistaken for symptoms of a heart attack.

Acid reflux disease can happen at all ages. The use of antacids can be helpful to ease the symptoms. Usually in adults acid reflux is caused by poor diet, lack of physical activity and lifestyle.

There are other factors that could also cause acid reflux. These factors are most common during pregnancy because women in this stage have increased hormone levels and in sense, the stomach is being pressured due to pregnancy. Also, obesity, overeating, some beverages and medications, and particular foods are also factors that can cause acid reflux.

A person who thinks he or she has acid reflux should learn more of the symptoms caused by it. For a fact, the best way to avoid acid reflux symptoms or heartburn is through prevention. By doing so, individuals will be able to avoid occurrences of acid reflux and at the same time, have a healthy lifestyle.

Acid reflux, most often is caused by inappropriate diet. Having a healthy diet and avoiding late night spicy snacking will help its eradication. Acid reflux, can lead to more serious conditions that could cause more problems. Getting to know and avoiding the types of foods that aggravate individuals will help control your acid reflux symptoms.
